How Did Taylor Sheridan Become the King of Revenue Diversification?

He has produced hit series starring Kevin Costner (*Yellowstone*), Jeremy Renner (*Mayor of Kingstown*), Sylvester Stallone (*Tulsa King*), and Zoe Saldaña (*Lioness*). But beyond Taylor Sheridan’s creative talent, what interests us here is the financial empire he has built through his core business. From an unknown screenwriter to an entertainment mogul, Sheridan has successfully diversified his revenue streams by developing a unique model that combines artistic creation with strategic management.

A screenwriter who became a film and television executive

Taylor Sheridan has made a name for himself in Hollywood thanks to his writing and compelling storytelling. After a relatively modest acting career, he made his breakthrough as a screenwriter with *Sicario* (2015), followed by *Comancheria* (2016) and *Wind River* (2017). These films were not only critical and commercial successes but also established Sheridan as a leading voice in the modern Western genre.

However, it was on television that he found the ideal vehicle for maximizing his revenue. By creating the series *Yellowstone* in 2018, starring Kevin Costner, he built a highly profitable television franchise, whose spin-offs (*1883*, *1923*) have amplified its success. Yellowstone has become one of the most-watched series in the United States, generating millions of dollars through broadcasting rights and licensing deals.

Building on One's Success

This success enabled Taylor Sheridan to sign an exclusive contract with Paramount Studios (reportedly worth $200 million). This gives him a great deal of creative freedom, but that’s not what we’re interested in.

An exclusive contract is a guaranteed source of income, and that’s great for using your reputation as leverage. And Taylor understands that well. He knows that a single season of a series has a budget ranging from 50 to 70 million dollars. It would be a shame to give that money to someone else, wouldn’t it?

Use the needs of the series to enrich yourself.

For those who haven't seen the show *Yellowstone*, it's a series set in the world of cowboys in Montana. For the show, they need wide-open spaces, cows, horses, and all the details that evoke that world.

So Taylor Sheridan bought a ranch—the Four Sixes Ranch, or “6666 Ranch”—which appears in the series. This ranch is very interesting because it allows Taylor to:

  • Rent out your property for $50,000 per week of filming at the studio
  • Rent out your cows for $25 per head per filming schedule
  • Rent out your horses for $2,000 per day per horse
  • Train the actors to ride horses at a cost of $200,000 per season.

Each episode costs between $5 million and $7 million; some estimate that Taylor Sheridan earns about $1 million per episode in addition to his income as a producer.

Use product placement to promote your own products

Relying solely on his salary and renting everything the show needs isn’t enough for our favorite producer. He has invested in a huge number of brands that are featured in the show’s universe—clothing, accessories, beverages… Much of what we see are brands owned by the producer.

In the show, if you see an actor drinking a beer, vodka, or whiskey, and the brand is visible, it’s one of Taylor Sheridan’s brands. This gives him extraordinary exposure, since, as we know, *Yellowstone* is one of the most-watched shows in the United States (120 million viewers per season).

At one point in the series, we even see one of the main characters on a website that sells livestock. Of course, that’s one of his brands, too. Some people invented product placement; Taylor Sheridan has mastered the concept.

A unique approach to storytelling and business

What sets Sheridan apart from other Hollywood creators is his ability to think like an entrepreneur. His model is based on several pillars:

  1. Primary sources of income: The lucrative contract signed with Paramount ensures a stable, long-term source of income
  2. Expanding revenue streams: He resells real estate services and animal rental services, and provides staff training…
  3. Showcasing Your Brands ThroughYour Creations: Product and brand placement is commonplace in film, so you might as well make sure they’re your own brands.

Conclusion: An Inspiring Model for Creators and Entrepreneurs

Taylor Sheridan is much more than just a screenwriter: he has become a true entertainment mogul by building an empire based on diversification and the smart exploitation of his creative universe. His journey illustrates how a creator can maximize his economic potential by adopting an entrepreneurial vision, while remaining true to his art.
